Fifteen Months Well Baby

Vaughn is fifteen months! He had his appointment on Monday, January 24, 2011. I'm just a few weeks late in posting. Each well baby appointment keeps getting harder as he has learned to strongly dislike (with screaming and very frightful body language) anyone with a stethoscope or any stranger that probes him. I don't blame him on the latter item. ha!

However, in the waiting room, he was having a great time playing with the kitchenette set and two little girls. He had no idea what was beyond the red door.

Here are his current stats:
Weight: 26.04 lbs. = 85.0% *Vaughn gained over five pounds in three months. I think it's time to monitor his food intake!
Height: 32 inches = 74% *He grew three inches in three months...makes me feel a little better about the weight gain
Head: 19 inches

I was on my own this time, but didn't have a problem with the shots as Vaughn was so hysterical, he had me very distracted. I didn't even remember to get a picture of him in the patient room. Poor baby was so terrified even to get measured. Yes, he was acting as if the Medical Assistant was torturing him with knives when she was trying to lay him on paper and write on it where it head and feet were.

All of his milestones have been met! He can identify at least one body part (his nose and ears), he is saying a few words (hi, mom, dada, go, door, lights, and probably a few more), he is walking (and falling a ton), and eating well (maybe, a little too well).

This is from his twelve month post, "The only question I really asked her was about how much he eats. I mean, he went from 17 pounds in July and is 21 pounds now. That's a lot of weight gain in just a few months. She said to let him eat as much as he wants, but to maybe slow him down so he can feel full. The boy will just eat and eat and eat."Well, not much as changed from his first birthday. He continues to try to eat us out of the house and he's only one! When I asked the doctor about it again this time, she said to go ahead and stop letting him eat as much. What we have decided to do is cut down on his milk and really focus on giving him more vegetables than processed snack-like items. He does love vegetables so that helps.

Other than the massive weight percentage jump, Vaughn is a healthy growing boy. It was crazy to hear these words from the Medical Assistant, "Well, he's just a big boy."

Baby Steps *14 Months*

Where does time go? I admittedly am having a small issue with making sure I keep up Vaughn's blog. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when there are more children to make and record memories with. So, I am going to try as hard as I can to continue to post more often as Vaughn's life is so worth recording!

Here's the ongoing fun things that have been happening in Vaughn's life as a fourteen month old...

1/11/11: It's through. After Vaughn got dressed for bed tonight, I noticed he had a POOL of drool on his shirt. It was so wet, I had to change it. His nose had been extra runny and last night he had a low-grade fever. I put my finger in his mouth and felt his first molar poking through. It hasn't been nearly as bad as the first eight teeth were. Now he have a few more molars to go.

01/08/11: Ending 14 months with a BANG! Vaughn got his first black eye :( He was walking at the park, when he fell and hit his eye against a little plastic step thing. He only cried for a few minutes. He's such a trooper.

12/31/10: First official sentence! We were staying in a cabin at Mormon Lake. Vaughn's pack n' play was right next to our bed. While Dave was getting ready for bed, Vaughn woke up, stood up next to my bed, patted my leg, and kept saying, "Hi....mom. Mom...hi. hi...hi...mom." Does that count as his first sentence?

12/31/10:  At dinner, Dusty was bouncing Molly as if she were on a pony. Vaughn was very intrigued. When Dusty asked Vaughn if he wanted to ride on his other leg, Vaughn, very clearly, shook his head, yes. We all looked at each other as he's never responded with a head-shake-yes before. So fun Uncle Dusty got to experience a first with us.

12/30/10: He finally did it! He shattered a plate while out to eat. Whenever he is done eating, Vaughn likes to throw his food and or cup and plate. We were at the Mormon Lake Lodge with cement floors and didn't catch Vaughn before the plate went crashing on the floor shattering into a million pieces. Vaughn didn't react until the server came rushing out. He cried so hard as if he knew he did something wrong. The server felt so bad she brought him out a cup of cherries :)

12/28/10: We went for a bike ride today with Michelle and Christine. Vaughn LOVED riding in the bike trailer I towed behind the bike as we rode around the lakes. So fun!

12/25/10: Vaughn had an amazing Christmas! Something he did for the first time today was get on his riding toy (his little red Cars riding toy) all by himself. There's no stopping him now. He got to ride on a "roller coaster" today, too, thanks to Nunny and Pappy.

12/19/10: I'm not sure I want to preserve this memory, but Vaughn pooped in the tub tonight while Grammy and I were bathing him. He hadn't gone all day so grammy totally said, "he really should poop before getting a bath," he didn't, so we went ahead and bathed him anyways. Man, did we learn a lesson!

12/ 18/10: He couldn't escape the dreaded ear infected! From daycare, Vaughn got pink eye which spread to both eyes and then caused a double ear infection. Although he looked terrible, he was still dancing and singing through it all even while in the Urgent Care waiting room.

12/16/10: Tonight at dinner with Uncle Dusty, Aunt Jamie, Grammy (she was in town!) and daddy, Vaughn finally found his nose. I have been grilling him about where his nose is and even though I know he knows what and where it is, he has failed to oblige. SO, tonight, he totally pointed at the schnauzer of his. So excited.

12/15/10: For a while now, especially with all the Christmas lights, Vaughn has been signing the word, lights. Now, he says the word with the sign. He's totally Dave's kid if one of his first words is, lights.

New obsession

Something I learned

Tonight, I learned that it's really hard to give a fourteen month old soup for dinner. I found a butternut squash recipe that looked really good. I've had it for a while and decided since Vaughn loves butternut squash, that it would be a good choice for dinner. When it's cold outside, I just love to eat some warm yummy soup.

What the heck was I thinking?

I basically tried giving a baby something that requires great coordination with a spoon, something Vaughn lacks, understandably.

With the soup, I also made a snapper and veggie dish which I figured he could eat the squash, zucchini and peppers. That didn't go over very well because the veggies were really fishy from cooking underneath, what do you know, a piece of fishy fish. Vaughn has had crab and liked it, but wasn't liking the snapper. In fact, he threw his bowl on the floor and took every bit of fish off of his tongue with a very disgusted look on his face.

That left him with just the soup to eat, which he LOVED. However, as mentioned, it was hard to get the soup in his mouth. It was EVERYWHERE! He was letting me give it to him, but got frustrated taking little bites, that he tried using his spoon himself. Fail! Soup everywhere, none made it to Vaughn's mouth. Then, he tried to pick the soup up with his fingers. Fail! Not much soup made it to Vaughn's mouth. We even tried giving him a straw to drink it up, but he looked at us like we were crazy. So, he ended up sticking his face in the bowl. Dave then helped him lift the bowl up so he could drink it.

Moral of the story, Vaughn couldn't get enough soup that he loved so much because there weren't many ways to get it into his mouth. Babies aren't made out to eat soup. I need to give it about a year.

By the end of dinner, Vaughn ended up eating a piece of peanut butter toast covered in butternut squash soup.

With walking brings...boo boo's

Yesterday, Vaughn and I wanted to show Dave a fun park we found in our neighborhood. We weren't there very long before Vaughn fell. His foot caught on the rubberized ground causing him to fall into a plastic step thing they had at the playground. When he first fell, we thought he hit his mouth, but after a few minutes, we could tell very clearly that it was his left eye because of all the swelling. Thankfully, it was just his eyebrow bone and not his actual eye.
I took these pictures after I got home from work. The one thing I noticed more than anything is that he is no longer a skinny baby. His face looks so chubby here, but oh so kissable.
We were expecting his eye to be really black and blue today, but instead, it just looks like he has a light purple eye shadow on.

It was hard for me to watch Vaughn fall, but now I feel like I'm better prepared for all the bumps and bruises he's going to get because that's what kids, and especially, boys do. At least this is what I've been told!

It is happening

"Are you ready for Vaughn to grow up," was the first question I was asked when dropping Vaughn off this morning.

I looked back at Miss Carol and said, "Yeah. I love the person he's becoming."

She didn't seem satisfied with that answer because that's not quite what she meant. She was really telling me that on Tuesday, Vaughn will no longer be a crab but a whale.

Vaughn's preschool is an underwater theme and all of the rooms have fish-related names. For the past four months, Vaughn has been a crawly crab. Yeah, interesting name for a baby room. Occasionally, he would get to go into the Angelfish room with the babies if there were too many kids in his room. They always choose a "nice baby" and Vaughn was usually it. Well, when he goes back to school next week, he will no longer have a crib with his name on it to nap in or a high chair to eat in or his own sippy cup to drink his milk from, but instead, he will have a mat to sleep on next to all his friends, a chair and table to sit at to eat lunch like a big kid, and a big boy cup. I think he's ready. I'm ready. I'm not quite sure Dave is ready just based on the response text I got when I broke the news to him today.

Even though I am ready, we both do have a few concerns since Vaughn hasn't been walking nearly as long as the other babies that are moving up. Also, he just started walking with shoes on about two weeks ago and needs to wear closed-toe shoes in the new room. And lastly, everytime I pass those rooms, it seems a little crazy with screaming toddlers running circles (literally) around their teachers.

Vaughn continues to meet milestones everyday. It's so fun to experience his learning and growing together. This is another huge step in becoming a little boy or at this time, a whale!

Bringing in 2011 in the snow

More traditions. Dave wants to do three things every year for the holiday season. First, we will try to go up to the Polar Express sometime after Thanksgiving. Second, Christmas morning will most likely be held at our house with our immediate family. And lastly, to rent a cabin up in Mormon Lake between Christmas and New Years. This year was a success with all three things.

At the beginning of last week, Dave was disappointed with the predicted forecast. He read that it was going to be in the 40's with no chance of snow. A few days before our trip, Dave's disappointment turned into more excitement as he saw there was going to be snow and a high in the 30's.

We left on Thursday, December 30 to head up to our rented cabin. On Wednesday night, the snow started and it was so bad that I-17 (the main highway to get to our destination) was closed. By noon, the road was reopened but then we heard that it was closed again. We met up with Uncle Dusty, Aunt Jamie and Molly in North Phoenix and the men had a brief meeting about what we should do. We decided to go for it.

Even while still in Phoenix, we could see snow on all the mountain tops and in some spots there was already snow on the ground. Typically, the snow can't be seen until we get past the Sedona exit which is just south of Flagstaff. As we drove, we had no idea what kind of conditions we would run into. Surprisingly enough, there were only a few spots that made Dave say, "Now, a two-wheel drive vehicle (which is what we have) should not be driving in these conditions." The two-lane highway had a path of only one-lane of clean pavement.

The road to get to Mormon Lake was not clean, but packed down and not too icy. It helped that it was barren and very wide. It was gorgeous driving through the covered pines. At last, we made it to Mormon Lake just before sunset. We "moved in" then went to dinner at the Mormon Lake Lodge.
We had one building, with two separate  cabins. It was a nice setup so that the babies could nap and sleep in one while the adults could talk and not worry about being super quiet in the other.

Our first night was spent staying up late while playing Scattegories. It was so typical when playing with Dusty and Dave, but so much fun. It created some great memories and added to our "snowed in" experience.

Before going to bed, Dave needed to bring Vaughn back over to our cabin. I had already fallen asleep but was woken up by Vaughn's first sentence, "Hi...mom.......hi...mom. Mom...hi," with his little hands touching my leg. His pack n' play was right next to my bed. Dave had gone into the bathroom to get ready for bed not realizing Vaughn was wide awake and wanting to play. We eventually moved his pack n' play away from our bed which helped Vaughn realize it was 4am and still sleepy time.

On New Year's Eve, Vaughn woke us up at 8:30am. We couldn't wait to take him outside to play in the snow and use my Christmas present (a fun new lens that I have no idea how to use yet). We put Vaughn's hat, mittens and vest on then set him free...on the porch. The very first thing he did was grab a handful of snow and put it where else, but in his mouth. This picture was his immediate reaction:
We then took him down to the big snow piles outside of our cabin. He wasn't quite sure what to do with all the snow. It was estimated that Mormon Lake had gotten over 30 inches of snow in the previous 48 hours. That is a lot of snow. Dave and I aren't even used to that much.
Despite the frigid temperatures, Vaughn was just excited to touch and throw the snow. We only let him play for ten minutes or so until it was time to head down to the lodge for brunch. We missed breakfast by ten minutes! Lunch food worked well though, too.

We spent New Year's Eve with each other, lounging around and eating lots of food. Vaughn even napped for three hours. By the time evening rolled around, Vaughn was hyper and not ready for bed until 10:30pm, which is over three hours past his normal bedtime. We decided to bend the rules for this one fun night of the year. It was almost 2011!

Soon after Vaughn fell asleep, I fell asleep. I really tried to stay up until midnight, but the night before and no nap didn't help me much. Dusty, Jamie and Dave all rang in the New Year together. Does it count that I was up for Eastern time's New Year and that Dave woke me up at midnight to give me a kiss then I fell back to sleep? Either way, it was so wonderful to all be together as we entered a new year.
During the middle of the night, Vaughn woke us up again, but this time he was crying. The first thing I noticed when I sat up was how my nose was very cold. I went over to pick Vaughn up and his little hands and feet were so cold even with all his blankies and footy fleece pajamas. I woke Dave up so he could turn our heater on. I looked at our thermometer and it was only 50 degrees in the room. Before we went to bed, it was 78 and Dave was sweating.

Dave soon discovered that the power was out! The temperature outside was NEGATIVE 25 and we had no power. The whole town of Mormon Lake was without electricity and it was 25 degrees below 0. Thank God we had a gas fire place that was holding some heat in the cabin.

Dave called Dusty to make sure they knew which they did and already had Molly in bed with them. Dave and I both looked at Vaughn and said, "Well, it looks like you're going to get to sleep with mommy and daddy tonight." We put an extra pair of pajamas underneath his fleece ones, a second pair of socks and his winter hat. He was a little cuddle bug right in between the two of us. It took him a few minutes to fall asleep but when he did, it made the cold cabin so worth it. I wish I had my camera to show how sweet it was to look next to me and see such a beautiful sleeping baby and his daddy next to him.

As soon as we woke up around 8:30am, it was go time. We went into action mode and got the whole cabin packed up, Vaughn wrapped in lots of blankets, and the car warmed up and scraped so we could drive into Flagstaff for some breakfast.

We ended up eating at a little diner Dave and I ate at before in downtown Flag. It was cute and the food was exactly what we needed. Vaughn ate a huge blueberry pancake and drank a whole cup of milk.

Our trip ended in a crazy way with record-breaking low temperatures and no electricity, but it was still such a great trip. The drive up was great, the snow was perfect, the conversations were wonderful, the babies had fun playing together, and we all got to spend 2010 ending and 2011 beginning together.
